The Unpopular Truth: 4 Things You Need to Do to Grow in Your Industry

We all want to grow in our industries, but sometimes that means doing things that don’t exactly feel comfortable or natural. As someone who’s been around the block a few times, I’m here to share four unpopular things you need to do consistently if you want to take your career to the next level.

  1. Debate Industry Insights on Social Media (Own Account)

Social media can be a minefield. But if you want to establish yourself as a thought leader in your industry, you need to be willing to share your opinions and engage in debates. Don’t be afraid to challenge the status quo or disagree with others. Just make sure you’re doing it in a respectful and professional manner. And please, don’t be a troll.

  1. Fake It Till You Make It (But Not Really)

When you’re starting out in your career, you might not feel like an expert. But if you want to be taken seriously, you need to start acting like one. That means speaking confidently and owning your accomplishments. It’s not about being fake; it’s about believing in yourself and your abilities. Be the person now that you are meant to be in future.

  1. Job Hop (But Not Too Much)

I know some people might say that job hopping is a bad thing, but I disagree. If you’re not learning and growing in your current role, it’s time to move on. Don’t be afraid to take calculated risks and try new things. Just don’t do it too often. Find a balance.

  1. Don’t Hang with People at Your Level

If you want to grow in your industry, you need to surround yourself with people who are smarter and more experienced than you. You will probably get a lot of labels for this, such as arrogant. But remember, people at your level often don’t have big opportunities for you. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to hang with people who can elevate you. Work is not a playground.

Growing in your industry takes time, effort, and a willingness to take risks. It’s not always easy, and it’s not always comfortable. But if you’re willing to put in the work and challenge yourself, the rewards will be worth it. So go ahead, take the road less traveled. Debate industry insights on social media, fake it till you make it, job hop (moderately), and surround yourself with people who are smarter than you. Your future self will thank you.
